Hurray for Fall!
Well..., yes it is fall in the Northwest! A great season and we are loving it. But at times it hardly seems like fall. This week our weather has been unseasonably warm with temps nearing 80. We haven't seen rain in such a long time we have forgotten what it looks like...well nearly so. And so you ask what's been happening with our family...
Sara is taking ice skating lessons this year! The Portland Lloyd Center is a shopping mall built around an ice rink. It was one of the first malls to be built in the country some 30+ years ago. It is a very nice mall with multiple levels, and some shops and walkways open to the sky. But in the center is a very nice ice rink, and they offer lessons.
So Sara began a series of six lesson several weeks ago. And she is doing great! She zips - well its almost a "zip" - around the rink amazingly well after just three lessons. And she is loving it as you can see from these pics. I wouldn't be suprised if this is not something she wants to continue to pursue once her lessons are over.
And then too Sara got to participate again as a cheerleader for one of the JV football games for the Scappoose Indians. Each year the cheerleading squad at the high school host a one-evening clinic for young girls. And those who participate get to take part in several cheers on the field at one of the JV football games. It is lots of fun for all and an exciting time as they march in mass onto the field and go through the routines they have learned. Sara had a ball, and did wonderfully.
And then we are enjoying the last of our garden. We have continued to harvest tomatoes and can them for this winter.
And then it is also just about time to cut loose Ol' Mr Jack-O-Lantern (pictured above) from his vine and set him up to greet passers-by. We planted 'giant' pumpkin seeds this year, but with not really the best soil in this new part of the garden the pumpkin did not grow that unusually big. But it will make a nice jack-o-lantern and it will be fun to harvest it out of our garden and to carve it.
Well that is our happenings of late. We wish you all a great fall season!

Oh dad...so cute! I bet Sara is so fun to watch on the ice. Has she bumped or fallen at all yet?
Reading your posts makes me miss coming up there for Thanksgiving like I have done the past two years. I sure miss you and Pam and Sara. Hopefully this summer we can come visit for a while and we can do all the great outdoor things the Northwest is famous for. I love you!

Ice skating...one thing I was never good at. I think I fell on my butt a few good times. Glad Sarah is having fun!
The pumpkin picture is beatiful! Just blow the picture up a few hundred percent and you will look like the master grower. Good idea, heh?
I was teased incessantly last week for not knowing that the pumpkin is considered a squash. My friends and I were discussing which vegetable was the most autumnal. They shouted "squash!" and I "pumpkin" and then a wave of laughter erupted. Who knew?
Dad, I love your new photo on the title box! Beautiful!
I am happy to know how well your family is doing. Great pictures from your garden and of Sara ice skating. I always loved to ice skate, too.
Mike went out the door this morning wearing the new LL Bean birthday shirt. He looks so handsome in it -- many thanks!!
I love the "branch" picture...very holiday-ish!
