End of Summer?

(Ready for the 3rd grade!)

They say that Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the end of summer. Well tis true for those starting school. Summer vacation ends and a new school year begins. Sara begins the third grade Tuesay morning.

But here in the Northwest, in the small corner of of our garden, we are still hoping for yet some warm weather to ripen up our tomato crop. We planted 11 plants this year in two locations and we have a ton (!) of tomatoes on the vine. We have been getting vine ripe tomatoes already and sooooo enjoying them. Nothing quite like a vine-ripened tomato. But there is much more hanging on the plants and we would like to can red tomatores rather than dig out the fried green tomato recipe...smile.
But we know too that fall is coming, and Mr. Jack-O'lantern is already waiting in his small corner of the green patch. Sara aleady has plans for this beauty and the face she is going to carve. We planted a "giant" variety this summer, and the vine has grown wildly. It even grew through the fence into our neighbors front flower bed, formed a pumpkin and then grew back again into the garden. The result is this silly pumpkin is growing hanging from the vine sandwiched between the fence and the rock wall of the flower bed. Not sure how it is going to come out, but it keeps growing.

What fun to grow a garden. How marvelous God has made His creation! From one very small seed a tiny shoot emerges and with care produces 100 fold or more of itself. In our culture, removed as so many of us are from growing things and the cycle of the seasons, I feel we too often fail to stand in wonder and appreciate the greatness of all that He has made. How interesting to consider that in the beginning God made a garden and put man and woman in the garden to tend it.

Well that's all for now. Have a great Labor Day weekend everyone!

-Walt for the three of us.
